I had to push myself this afternoon to head to the gym. It was rainy Saturday here in RI and my bed sounded much better than lifting weights.
I put on my music, whipped together some oatmeal and protein powder and headed out anyway.
I was having a good workout when I noticed a woman on the leg press machine near me.
She was on her cell phone while she performed 1/4 range leg presses. It looked like she was sitting in her recliner on the phone.
She proceeded to other machines in the same fashion.
As I finished up with some ab work I saw her grab her coat and head out of the gym still on the phone.
Now, to her credit she did get to the gym but with her effort she was better off staying at home. Let no one kid you, losing weight, getting in shape and staying in shape is not easy.
You will not achieve your goals by just walking through the gym door. You have to put in the effort and focus. That is one reason why I love my music when I go to the gym. It drowns out the chatter and noise and motivates you to push yourself.
So, the next time you head to the gym make sure you are putting in the effort and do yourself a favor. Leave the phone in the car. Gym time is sacred time if you are serious about your results. Treat it that way.

So true, Matt! I completely agree. Working in gyms over the years, I’ve seen many ridiculous things myself. I actually had a client that wanted to take a phone call, put the phone “ear to shoulder” and then proceed with lat pull downs! Ah, my answer was, “Oh, no, not on my time!” Proper form and focus is the only way to progress and see results, not to mention, avoid injury.
Great post, thanks!
Thanks for stopping by Patty. It’s so true, many people think that just going to the gym is enough to see results. What they need to understand is that motivation and pushing yourself is so important. It’s also important to team up with a trainer that you have a good relationship with and who will push you to achieve your goals.
